There are lots of boxcars stored in the "Brush Yard" at Altoona.

10N comes off the mountain and passes Alto with a headend helper.
An A-B-A set of F units leads eight cars east to Harrisburg, then they'll go south.
March 2008
The Everett has sold their 6051 to NREX. Here the CB10 has returned to Altoona with the 6051 and cars in tow.

NS 999 just got parked after a few hours of use before I showed up. It's now plugged in and charging.

Only two tracks of cars remaining in the Altoona Scale Class Yard.
December 2009

January 2010
SD40E helpers take over the headend of a hopper train that got to Altoona with only one engine. The helpers are required for the climb up the steep east slope.
April 2010
MW has already removed the home signals at CP-Rose and is now installing the handthrows for the switches.
July 2010
Over the last winter, the class yard at Altoona was emptied. It had been used for storage since the 60s. This summer they're now removing all the rails and ties.
A load of ties is scooped up.
This trackhoe has an electromagnet to lift the rail and set it aside.

Here are some new photos of the class yard in Altoona and its removal.

A group of five SD90MAC-Hs have shown up. The yard job is taking them across the main and over to the Juniata Shops.
A customer in Australia has puchased these five 90MACs and the Juniata Shops is being contracted to rebuild them.

A dash 9 standard cab is also being taken to Juniata.
November 2010
All but one track has been removed from the class yard at Altoona.
Power for a Strawberry Ridge train is making its way from the cabin tracks to their train on the relay tracks.
Only one span of the 17th Street bridge remains. They're waiting for a crane to come out so they can life this last span as one piece.
April 2011
NS is preparing to replace all the PRR-era position signals in the Altoona area with color light signals. Here is CP-Works with PRR signals.
At Rose, the new signal gantries lay next to a yard track for easy loading on flatcars to be taken to their respective locations.

Eastbound 573 empty hoppers by Alto and the passenger station. This train was nothing but RBMN tub gons.
June 2011
NS is replacing all of the PRR era signals in the Altoona area with color light signals. Here we see the old relay shed, its replacement, and the new signal cantilever.
This is the eastbound signal for CP-Works. It will soon be history.
July 2011
This shot shows the present Works eastbound signal with the new signal next to it. The old signal dates to the Penn Central era.
August 2011
Here's a look at where the scale class yard once was from the 8th street bridge. It sure has greened up over the summer.
To the left of the previous photo is a more active shot with the mainline on the left and CP-Homer in the distance with a new signal partially erected.
Here's CP-Works as seen from the 7th street bridge. Note the new signals which are not yet in service.
