February 2004
Today I came to Altoona to find NS GP38-3 5801, and look what I find...she sure is shiny, but she's only been active for a week!
NS 5801 shoves cars into Altoona Pipe & Steel with her 2000 hp engine.
NS GP38AC 2869 is helping NS 5801 switch Altoona Pipe & Steel.
Once CB10 returned from Hollidaysburg, NS 2218 took 5801's place.
A "heads-up" from the smurf via Paolo preceeded the arrival of 10N by about two hours. Two UP SD70M's, the first one phase 1 and the second phase 2a, make up the majority of power on this train.

NS 4800, an ex-CR B40-8, is at the head end of this train at Alto.
May 2004
Who says CR units aren't allowed to lead office car specials??? Actually, this one is empty and deadheading to Juniata, where the cars are stored and maintained.
October 2004
Not long before NREX 9402 showed up in Altoona, there was a discussion on LocoNotes about it. Notice the really long porch on the rear.
If I recall correctly, this unit was originally an SD40T-2 or SD45T-2, and had its radiator and long hood modified/replaced.
NEGS 2370 is on this same train.
May 2005
Similar to Union Railroad style, NS 2221 and 2218 lead a decent sized train by Altoona Pipe & Steel Supply Company, a freight car repair facility. The Baldwin switcher will be leaving for SMS Rail Service soon.
October 2006

Local C42 is doing some yard work among several other locomotives.
A 536 is puting its power together and will head east soon with new hoppers.
A blue helper set is pretty rare these days.
The eastbound construction debris train recrews at Rose in Altoona.
11A comes into the yard via the old freight main. The last unit is an NW GP38AC to be dropped off an Juniata. The second to last unit is another Juniata rebuild.
The power shoves past the 7500, the first ES40DC, which is preparing to couple to its train.
The 10A has coupled to part of its train and now is about to couple to the rest of it.
March 2007
NS 2222 looks as if she's going somewhere west of here, as she wasn't dropped off at JBS.
Helpers are passing Homer to come up the connector for a recrew at Rose.
This SD60I is ready to charge out of town with this coal train.
These two beauties were in the consist of a westbound freight. They were dead in tow.
A phase 2b SD70M leads a newer sister SD70M-2 on this westbound UPS train at the Amtrak station.
Out of view of this picture is a new aluminum signal bridge. It appears that the PRR signal bridge at Alto will be replaced.
A blue pair of helpers passes a black pair on a waiting freight.
More blue leading.
CB60 yard job shoving cars down 1 yard for head room.
CB22 yard job has its form D and will run down the Cove Secondary this evening.
A high & wide is parked next to the Rose yard office and is waiting for a recrew.
A UP AC6044CW is holding the air on this loaded coal train.
An empty slab train comes off the mountain with a pair of EMD cousins.
Autoracks and autoparts head pass the Amtrak station with one road unit and a pair of helpers.
This heavy manifest has head end and rear end helpers.
Decent color on this westbound.
Helpers shove hard on a westbound.
Norfolk Southerns F units made their first main line run today, and I was one of the first few people to get a shot of them doing so. Here they roll up track 2. The GP38-2's are there to provide dynamic braking to simulate a load.

NS 2719 is getting read to make a double and head east.
An interesting shot as two Conrail blue pass eachother.

Hmmm, a rare blue helper set. The helpers are being painted fairly rapidly and blue helper sets are getting pretty rare.
Wide view at Rose.
A road crew is backing to their train.
The Rose yard office with the yard to the left and behind.
