February 2004
Today I came to Altoona to find NS GP38-3 5801, and look what I find...she sure is shiny, but she's only been active for a week!
Here's a cab shot showing the chopped nose. 5801 was rebuilt from high nose GP50 7070.
NS 5801 shoves cars into Altoona Pipe & Steel with her 2000 hp engine.
Three SD40-2's, two of them blue, lead an empty PPLX hopper train past Alto Tower.
Another hopper train passes through but with Dash-9's as power.
NS GP38AC 2869 is helping NS 5801 switch Altoona Pipe & Steel.
Once CB10 returned from Hollidaysburg, NS 2218 took 5801's place.
A "heads-up" from the smurf via Paolo preceeded the arrival of 10N by about two hours. Two UP SD70M's, the first one phase 1 and the second phase 2a, make up the majority of power on this train.
Juniata
NS 10N heads up to road crossing at Rose for a recrew.
April 2004
NS 4800, an ex-CR B40-8, is at the head end of this train at Alto.
May 2004
Who says CR units aren't allowed to lead office car specials??? Actually, this one is empty and deadheading to Juniata, where the cars are stored and maintained.
October 2004
Not long before NREX 9402 showed up in Altoona, there was a discussion on LocoNotes about it. Notice the really long porch on the rear.
If I recall correctly, this unit was originally an SD40T-2 or SD45T-2, and had its radiator and long hood modified/replaced.
NEGS 2370 is on this same train.
May 2005
On a Sunday evening, yard job CB92 gets its form D to head south on the Cove Secondary to serve Millennium Rail, the Everett Railroad, and to continue cleaning out Hollidaysburg Shops.
Similar to Union Railroad style, NS 2221 and 2218 lead a decent sized train by Altoona Pipe & Steel Supply Company, a freight car repair facility. The Baldwin switcher will be leaving for SMS Rail Service soon.
October 2006
SD40-2 helpers push hard against a westbound manifest.
A pair of C40-9W's lead an intermodal uphill at the Brickyard Crossing.
November 2006
A westbound is preparing to leave the yard with a trio of GE, including two ES40DC's.
December 2006
SD80MAC 7203 is prepared to lead this empty hopper train up the mountain to South Fork. The 7203 will stay there with the train, and the trailing three SD40-2s will go to Cresson.
A Metro-North P32AC-DM has arrived for unknown work at Juniata.
This train is stopped to protect a crew change at Rose.
January 2007
Local C42 is doing some yard work among several other locomotives.
A 536 is puting its power together and will head east soon with new hoppers.
A blue helper set is pretty rare these days.
The eastbound construction debris train recrews at Rose in Altoona.
These four units rolled up to rose for a recrew also.
The first two units are helpers. The first, NS 3428, is a 1993 Juniata rebuild from an SD40.
11A comes into the yard via the old freight main. The last unit is an NW GP38AC to be dropped off an Juniata. The second to last unit is another Juniata rebuild.
The yard job, CB10, is switching stored cars out of the storage tracks. Here they're shoving toward the old freight main.
