Georgetown Loop RR Pics from August 25-26, 2006

In August 2006, Frank Shoop and I made the trip from Pennsylvania to Colorado with a stop in Indiana to visit EBT #6. The purpose of the trip was to visit the Durango & Silverton, Cumbres & Toltec, and Georgetown Loop, plus the Colorado RR Museum. I shot 35mm slides during the trip and, as you may have heard, about half of them were destroyed during processing. Frank has kindly provided his digital images for this Web site.

Today we missed the last train but we'll be back tomorrow. The GLR's freight equipment is kept in good shape. Their passenger cars are modified drop bottom gondolas and boxcars.

Not long before our trip, #12 suffered a broken axles. Here the handsome 2-6-2 sits outside the shop.

And here is a close up of the broken axle on the other side.

Luckily, also not long before our trip, #9 was brought back to service. Shes a small 2-6-0, but is capable of pulling 5 cars up the 4% grade.

They've now pulled ahead for some water. The oil tank is on the other side of the station.

After #9 was put away, we had some time to kill, so we went to check out the Devils Gate High Bridge.

Wind can be pretty strong out there.

This boxcar is on a siding on one end of the bridge.

We've now walked the track below the bridge. They say is 100 ft above the creek.

And another view from the tracks opposite the loop of the bridge.

We've stayed overnight in Georgetown and on our way over to Silver Plume we stop by the Georgetown Loop, Inc Office. Georgetown Loop, Inc does not operate the GLR anymore, but does operate the Canon City and Royal Gorge and maintains their same office here. I don't know which shays operated on the GLR under this company, but here's a three truck shay lettered Georgetown Loop.

#9 is preparing to take the first train down into the loop this morning.

We've detrained for the mine tour and #9 is seen holding back the train on one of a few bridges on the line.

After the mine tour, you get back on the train, travel below the bridge, then #9 runs around the train and pulls us back to Silver Plume. Here's we're crossing the High Bridge.

Don't look down if you're afraid of heights.
