East Broad Top Best of 2006

by Lance Myers

2006 was a great year. FEBT contunued their strong support for the railroad and #15 operated all year without any break downs. As in years past, I have created a "Best of 2006" gallery for your convenience. This collection includes the best photographs that were shot by myself over the past year. This collection of images best represents the 2006 season and is not necessarily good photography.

April 18 - Turntable Redecking
Here is a close up shot of the air-operated motor that was once used to turn this turntable with one person.
April 20 - Turntable Redecking
While it still takes forever, the backhoe makes this job much easier.
Now we take a look inside the roundhouse to gear everyone up for the 2006 season. #14 sits with smokebox open waiting on a decision from the FRA. A waiver was applied for to operate #14 during a pinch and for special occasions. You see, #14 is in fine running order; she just hasn't had the normally required 1472-day FRA inspection.
Twin sister #15 is nearby in the same state.
April 27 - Turntable Redecking
The south end of the turntable has been stripped on the old timbers.
This view shows all of the bracing inside that is rarely seen.
With the lid open, you can see the freshly oiled parts. This is a roller bearing and is in good shape.
April 30 - Odd Fellows Crossing Reopened
Odd Fellows Cemetary Rd Crossing was reopened yesterday. A joint within the crossing was broken and is being repaired.
May 2 - Turntable Redecking
The rails are aligned and tie plates are slipped under. Daniel then uses the air spiker to drive the spikes into the timbers.
May 7 - Turntable Painting
During the previous day, the push poles were installed. Today, the new handrails are installed and welded on. FEBT agreed to strip and paint the turntable bridge girders to help preserve it for another hundred years.
June 17 - The RR at Night
This shot almost looks like a 1950's evening after the railroad has closed for the night.
Looking towards the main shop entrance.
September 10 - Odds and Ends
A photo from the disappearing boney pile.
M-3 is put back in its shed on Sunday afternoon.
September 30 - More Odds and Ends
This Climax-powered Plymouth has been stored in the locomotive shop since it was delivered to the EBT in 1978. Once the three GE center cabs were sold, this was the only locomotive left in the locomotive shop. This weekend, while hoppers were being switched around, we decided to move it to another area of the shops where it likely won't be noticed by the public.
By the way, this 14-ton Plymouth model JLC is builders number 2832 built 3/1928.
This is the last shot of the scale test car in its old, faded, and tattered paint. Look for a freshly painted scale car at the Spectacular.
