Mighty Western Maryland steam locomotives once rumbled across the Potomic on this bridge. |
From the ground you can see how the piers were built to accomodate two tracks if needed. |
A coaling tower, box car, and a caboose remain from the PRR days at Renovo, PA. Just to the east stands an entire railroad complex. |

This bridge on the abandoned Petersburg Secondary spans a farm road. The location is about a mile west of Petersburg, PA. |
| March 2004 |
This month we continue where the previous photo stops. This portion of the P&H in Central PA was abandoned later than the western portion. There are piles of ties every hundred feet or so. |
Here's a side view of the 3-span bridge. It can be seen right next to Rt 4003 just two miles from Petersburgh. |
A local farmer uses the bridge and right-of-way to access his farm. |
This is the view in the opposite direction. |
The next crossing is at Rt 4005 two miles east of Alexandra. (Looking west) |
In the middle of Alexandria is a small reminder that a railroad once operated through here. The building is not original, and this is the only portion the track remaining. It's only a few sticks long. |
On the west end of Alexandria is a culvert. |
Here's the right-of-way again at a second crossing of Rt 4004. (looking east) |
In the opposite direction (west) in the MeadWestvaco factory. The P&H terminated here until it was completely abandoned. |
A no trespassing sign marks the right-of-way at the crossing of Rt 4014. (looking east) |
An 11-mile portion of the P&H is now a rail trail between Alfareta and Williamsburg. Hikers, bikers, and horseback riders can enjoy an afternoon on this scenic branchline. |
Also at Water Street, one of the old mile posts stands next to a new mile post. |
This is a stone arch over a creek at Blairfour which is about 3-4 miles south of Water Street. |
At Mt. Etna, the Juniata makes a tight bend and the P&H crossing the river twice in just a couple hundred feet. This is the first bridge. A four span deck girder. |
This is the only bridge I've found on this line wide enough for two tracks. The right side is for the rail trail, and the left is for a road. |
This bridge is a tree span through girder. |
West of Williamsburg, it appears as if the rail trail is being extended. This is looking rr west at Rt 866 on the west side of town. The P&H again crosses Rt 866 two miles west of Williamsburg. (looking east) |
The P&H again crosses Rt 866 two miles west at Ganister. (looking east) |
Just a little west is this highe bridge over a rapid stream. |
Near the village of Horrell the P&H once crossed the Juniata here. These peirs are all that remain of a four or five span girder bridge. |
Also in Horrell I found this. Looks like it could be a foundation for a signal mast. |
This is where the tracks end from the Hollidaysburg side. These rails don't go past this road. |
At the Rt 2007 crossing in Hollidaysburg, two tracks continue into the weeds. Ahead is a hand-thrown crossover. |
This bridge remains from the old alignment of the PRR through Huntingdon. This is Standing Stone Creek. |
This is the Salisbury Viaduct of the Western Maryland just west of Meyersdale, PA. This impressive structure is 1,908 feet long and 101 feet high. |
Keystone Viaduct is located just west of Meyersdale on the same WM line. This massive bridge is 910 feet long. This and the above are now part of the Allegheny Highlands Trail. |

In Colorado, this line is abandoned, but this small wooden trestle remains intact. Check out the deer under it on the left side. Photo by Frank Shoop Jr. |
| February 2007 |
Half of this bridge remains just outside of Tyrone, PA from the PRR Fairbrook Branch that left the Middle Division toward State College. |
| March 2007 |
I finally have been able to get out of bed early enough to shoot this bridge from this side. Same as previous photo. |
Abandoned WM bridge at Magnolia, WV. |

Truss over the river, girder on the approach. |

The H&BTMRR right of way can be seen diping into the lake in this view. |

This abandoned Western Maryland bridge crosses the Patomac between WV and MD near Cumberland, MD. |

Look closely and you'll see the footprint of the East Altoona Roundhouse. |

This former Cambria & Indiana Railroad bridge spans Rt 22 west of Cresson, PA. |
| December 2008 |
This is the Cumberland Valley (PRR) bridge in Harrisburg. This bridge still crosses the Susquehanna with its catenary poles in tact but without any tracks. |
